The name 'diplodocus' was first used in 1878, a Neo-Latin term from Greek meaning 'double beam' - this was in reference to the unusual double-beamed chevron bones found in the tail. 

The diplodocus was a giant dinosaur averaging an impressive 26 metres long and weighing in excess of 15,000 kg. the diplodocus lived in the jurassic era (152-145 million years ago) and is characterised with its long neck and tail, sturdy legs and small spikes along its spine. They populated the area that is now The USA. As a herbivore, the diplodocus would mostly have fed on leaves and soft plants.
