The plesiosaur (or plesiosaurus) were a large marine reptile who first appeared toward the end of the Triassic period but became more developed in the jurassic period (152-145 million years ago). They would have had a wide distribution across the world via the sea so there have been a lot of their discoveries worldwide. There have been a high volume of their fossils found in the 'Jurassic Coast' area of the UK (south coast of England) with Mary Anning (born 1799 in Lyme Regis) making significant discoveries with the plesiosaur by finding and assembling the first complete skeleton in 1823. Lyme Regis is often described as the home of the plesiosaur for these reasons.

The name plesiosaurus means 'close to lizard'
